SOME NOTES ON JUDGING THE ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL
When faced with an average entry of Springers anywhere in Australia, sorting through the number of differing types, shapes and sizes can be a daunting task for the new judge. Here are some guidelines to make that task easier..
1 . The general appearance of the Springer is described as "the highest on the leg and raciest in build of all British Land spaniels" (British Land spaniels are the Cocker, Field, Sussex, Clurnber, English Springer and Welsh Springer). Therefore the Springer is expected to be racier than the other spaniels only, NOT racy in comparison to a Setter.
So therefore when evaluating the Show Springer, you are looking for a comparatively elegant, refined dog, not short on the leg or of a dumpy or stocky appearance. This is not to say that the dog can be underdone or weedy, but you should look for a dog that has the necessary substance combined with the correct length of leg and a streamlined appearance.
2. The Springer is basically a SQUARER dog, not rectangular, like most of the other Spaniel varieties. He should be symmetrical and balanced and moderate.
3. The Springer is a working dog and this should be borne in mind when judging the dogs even though your entry will probably never see a days work!
It has to be said however that many highly rated show points will have little or no effect in the field. (Conformation and markings for example)
POINTS THAT WILL AFFECT THE SPRINGERS ABILITY TO WORK.
Remember the UK Kennel Club’s mantra “Fit for Function, Fit for life!”
